Historical Tribute & Full Acknowledgement
The Librarius Foundation & Sinan Kökbugur
This digital edition of Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde owes its entire foundation and textual existence to Sinan Kökbugur and his landmark project, Librarius (http://www.librarius.com), founded in the mid-1990s with co-editor Archy Mimarius.
In the infancy of the World Wide Web, Sinan Kökbugur embarked on an extraordinary endeavor: transcribing, verifying, and meticulously hyperlinking the complete Middle English text of Geoffrey Chaucer's poetic works. Over several years of intensive scholarship, he created a comprehensive glossary containing more than 2,000 Middle English headwords, grammatical parts of speech, and concise modern definitions. Every challenging word across all five books of Troilus and Criseyde was painstakingly tagged with targeted anchor links to allow instantaneous lexical consultation in HTML frames.
Praise for a Quarter-Century of Open Scholarship
“For nearly thirty years, Librarius stood as one of the most generous, reliable, and cherished free resources for students, schoolteachers, medievalists, and curious readers encountering Middle English poetry for the first time. Countless essays have been written, and thousands of readers first learned to hear the music of Chaucer's verse, through the tireless devotion of Sinan Kökbugur.”
To ensure this pioneering digital artifact remains accessible forever, an exact, bit-for-bit mirror of the original 1996 Netscape-era frameset edition is maintained right here on this server, complete with its original parchment backgrounds, typography, and glossary frames.
Parallel Modern English Translation
Poetic Translation by A. S. Kline
While the original Librarius edition provided facing modern English translations for The Canterbury Tales, it did not include a facing translation for Troilus and Criseyde. To fulfill this long-standing wish for modern readers, this 21st-century edition integrates the acclaimed line-for-line poetic translation created by British poet and translator A. S. Kline, courtesy of Poetry in Translation (poetryintranslation.com).
Kline's translation was composed with a specific artistic purpose: preserving the exact seven-line rhyme royal stanzaic structure (a-b-a-b-b-c-c) and iambic rhythm of Chaucer while replacing obsolete vocabulary with expressive, accessible modern English. Each of the 1,177 stanzas (8,239 lines) across all five books is mapped line-for-line to the Middle English text, allowing readers to toggle the facing translation on and off with a single keystroke (F) or hover over any line to highlight its corresponding original verse.
